About Us

Mike Finnin started in the car business right out of college, over thirty years ago, when he bought a Ford dealership from his father in a small town in Kansas.

In 1979, Mike looked for a dealership in an area with larger growth potential. During this search, a Ford dealership in Dubuque, IA. came up for sale. He visited Dubuque in July 1979. He bought the store, moved his wonderful wife, Sharon, and two young children to Dubuque one month later.

Six years of hard work later Mike acquired a dealership which sold Mercedes Benz, Renault, and Volkswagen, University Imports. Mike soon realized it would be more cost effective to have the franchises under one roof. In 1987 he moved Mike Finnin Motors to the Mike Finnin Ford location. At the same time he acquired the Jeep franchise as a result of being a Renault dealer.

In 1993 Mike Finnin Motors continued to grow with the addition of Chrysler, Plymouth and Eagle franchises. In order to meet the demands of the growing number of franchises he built a new facility at 4355 Dodge Street, two stop lights away from the Ford location. This new location sold Mercedes, Volkswagen, Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep, and Eagle. The market expense for Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen were very high in relation to the area potential sales. Shortly, after moving to a new facility Mike agreed to relinquish Volkswagen immediately and Mercedes a few years later. 

The latest addition to the Finnin family was Kia in December 2007. Presently, Mike Finnin Ford is located at 3600 Dodge St., Dubuque, IA. and Mike Finnin Chrysler, Jeep, Kia is located at 4355 Dodge St., Dubuque, IA. Renault pulled out of the United States market and Chrysler eventually dropped Eagle and Plymouth. Today the family continues to reside in Dubuque and work in the family business. Mike is quick to point out Sharon Finnin was instrumental in supporting the family and business from the beginning and thirty years later the family will not let her retire.

Mike believes strongly about giving back to the community which supported him and his family for over thirty years. He is Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Finley Hospital, member of the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce and member of the Galena Area Chamber of Commerce. Hillcrest Family Services, United Way, Finley Hospital, Mercy Hospital and Y Domestic Violence Center are just some of the various charitable organizations in the community which receive support from Mike & Sharon Finnin.
